Six months ago on a cold day in October we got the news that no parent wants to hear. Heartbroken and terrified we navigated this trial as best as we could. Well here we are six months later celebrating the goodness, the sovereignty, and the love of our God!
Since our last update a lot has changed but in a good way! At the end of February, Zeke had a random bout of sickness that threw all of us for a loop. He was throwing up and unable to keep any food down so we took him into the ER to be evaluated. We got admitted back to our oncology floor for further testing for GI bugs, viral panels, and much scarier.. bowel complications. It was an extremely difficult few days and although we never had a clear answer to what happened his symptoms improved and we were discharged.
All of his tests came back negative and we and our team were at a loss as to what happened. One of the chemotherapy’s that Zeke is on is extremely constipating. He had received chemo 8 days before so we assumed that the chemo just built up in his system and made him severely constipated.
After those super tumultuous days in the hospital we had many discussions and prayer and ultimately decided that It was in Zeke’s best interest to stop treatment all together. We discussed this with our oncology team and after talking through it they agreed with us and allowed us to end the treatment two sessions early! It has been so refreshing to experience medical professionals that care so deeply for the entire being of a child and are able to look past the “protocol” and support what’s best for their patient.
After the decisions were made all that was left to do was a final CT scan and MRI of the kidney to confirm there was no evidence of disease.
Today (March 27th) Zeke had his final scans 🥹 although his full report is not in yet, the surgeon who did his procedure went down to radiology and personally looked at the scans and said everything “looks perfect”. It feels surreal! Although we knew he was doing well, there was this constant fear in our heads that something would be there.
Zeke was able to “ring the bell” to signify end of treatment and was supported with lots of friends and family beside him.
This beautiful moment was followed by an afternoon filled with pizza and joy with all of our closest friends and family to commemorate this day. For those of you who were there today- we can’t thank you enough for loving our sweet boy. ❤️
Sometimes it’s hard to understand why the Lord ordains these things to happen and to be honest we still don’t understand- but the underlying message is that he was faithful, he was good, and our sweet boy came out on the other side.
Friends- there are no words that could display our gratitude enough for all the prayers and support we have received through this time. Please join us this summer on June 27th as we celebrate this joyful news and give our miracle boy the birthday (and cancer free party) he deserves!

Dr. Thomas!
